Two acclaimed photographers discuss the balancing act inside the daily life of a photographer.


Smiley Pool Bio

Since the mid 1980's, photojournalist Smiley N. Pool has been collecting images that capture the critical stories of our time and the memorable moments in individual peoples lives.

He’s covered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and 9/11, the travels and funeral of Pope John Paul II, nine Olympic games, professional sporting events like the Super Bowl and NBA finals, visiting dignitaries and presidential inaugurations, and many other major local, national and international news events.

Pool was a key contributor to the Dallas Morning News’ coverage of Hurricane Katrina, which won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. He is a seven-time winner of the National Press Photographers Association regional photographer of the year award, as well as numerous other local, state and national awards. His portfolio of work for 2005 was judged runner up for Photojournalist of the Year honors in the Best of Photojournalism competition.

He has served as a judge for both POYi and the NPPA Best of Photojournalism, taught and mentored at the Eddie Adams Workshop and the NPPA Multimedia Immersion, been a member of the board of the National Press Photographers Association and volunteers for the Baylor Pediatric AIDS Initiative and AIDS Foundation Houston.

A native Texan who was born in Galveston, Pool is currently the chief photographer and photo coach at the Houston Chronicle. He has also worked for the Dallas Morning News, Colorado Springs Gazette and Austin American Statesman. He was hired full-time following his internship at the Austin American Statesman as a college freshman and freelanced for the weekly Suburban Journal newspapers in St. Louis as high school senior.









Evans Caglage Bio

            Fort Worth native Evans Caglage discovered an interest in photography after borrowing a camera for a road trip upon graduating from high school in 1974. Soon after starting at The University of Texas at Arlington, an Associated Press photographer suggested working at the student newspaper. He joined The Dallas Morning News staff in 1979.

Not long after that, Evans developed an interest in photo illustration. He began working in the newspaper’s studio, covering assignments for lifestyles sections including Texas Taste, Fashion!Dallas and Dallas Life Magazine. He currently photographs mainly food, fashion, portraits, and still life.

Evans earned Bachelor of Arts from The UTA majoring in Communications with minors in math, physics, chemistry, civil engineering and electrical engineering. He has received many honors and awards undefined among them, recognition from the Society of Newspaper Design, Print Design Annual, Atrium Fashion Award, World Food Media Awards, Pictures of the Year, Associated Press Managing Editors, Dallas Press Club and National Press Photographers.
